Senior Software Engineer — Spatial Analytics & Open Formats

About the role

CARTO is a cloud-native spatial analysis platform used by companies such as IKEA, Coca-Cola, T-Mobile, Swiss Re and AXA. This is a remote-first, full-time role open to candidates based anywhere in the EU or USA, sitting across the Analytics Toolbox and Workflows surfaces. It is described as a vision-and-execution role: defining how spatial analytics is packaged, deployed across partner engines and plugged into the cloud-native geospatial stack, and owning the PR that proves it works.

Key responsibilities

• Shape the Analytics Toolbox framework, including how spatial analytics is packaged, versioned and pushed to partner engines, and how it works when the consumer is an LLM agent.
• Set the SQL strategy for partner engines (BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, Databricks, Postgres, Oracle) so that code is written once and runs everywhere while keeping warehouse-native performance.
• Define what spatial-first Iceberg looks like, following the earlier work on GeoParquet and RaQuet.
• Represent CARTO in the open: OGC working groups, the Cloud Native Geospatial community, FOSS4G, conferences, RFCs and standards.
• Help define the interface between the Toolbox and AI agents, and ship production code in a cloud-native, serverless environment (GCP or AWS).

Required profile

• A career spent in the cloud-native geospatial world, with strong opinions on the direction of tools such as DuckDB, GeoParquet, STAC, Arrow, Iceberg, point cloud formats, MobilityDB or similar.
• Deep knowledge of SQL at the engine level, including execution plans, partitioning, clustering, file pruning and pushdown.
• Experience shipping LLM-powered features and working with agentic patterns.
• Community presence: a FOSS4G or CNG talk, a maintained OSS project, a standards working group membership or a cited blog post.
• Low-ego technical leadership, giving direct feedback in PRs and making colleagues better.

Required skills

• SQL at the engine level (BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, Databricks, Postgres, Oracle)
• Cloud-native, serverless environments (GCP or AWS)
• TypeScript / Node.js is a plus, as it is the backend, but not the primary hiring signal
